Of the teams that were ranked, two of them are headed to the playoffs this weekend. Another four teams were ranked with two of them kicking off their seasons this week.

The McMaster football team were ranked fifth last week but after a loss to finish off the regular season they fell two spots to seventh in the U SPORTS rankings. The Marauders finished third in the OUA and will host the Queen’s Gaels at Ron Joyce Stadium on Saturday starting at 1:00 PM for the quarter-finals.

Following a pair of victories last weekend to clinch second place in the OUA West and a first-round bye in the playoffs, the men’s soccer team were bumped up a spot to eighth place in the national rankings. The Marauders will host a playoff game on Sunday at Ron Joyce Stadium against an opponent to be determined. Game time is 3:00 PM.

McMaster finished their season in eighth in the final top 10 poll of the year. Last Friday, they defeated the York Lions 36-19 to capture the OUA bronze medals.

Both men’s and women’s cross-country teams took last week off from competition but remained in the top 10 heading into the OUA Championships this weekend in Windsor. The women remained in 10th spot while the men fell one spot to fifth place.

While they finished last year on a high note, those voting in the top 10 rankings believed the Marauders’ women’s volleyball team would pick up where they left off and ranked them fourth in the first rankings of the year. The team earned their ranking with a tournament win at the University of Ottawa as well as beating the Toronto Varsity Blues in exhibition action.

The women’s volleyball team starts conference play on Friday night at when they host the Ryerson Rams, their 2017 OUA semi-final opponents, at the Burridge Gym.

One notable team not in a top ten position is the men’s volleyball team. They are the defending OUA champions, winning the last five consecutive championships and eight of the last ten OUA titles. Add in they knocked off the defending NCAA champions Ohio State Buckeyes in two matches. If they can make a statement in their conference opening game on Friday, they could find themselves in rankings next Tuesday.

Also this weekend, the men’s rugby team will host the Brock Badgers at Back 10 Field on Saturday October 28th starting at 2:00 PM in the OUA quarter-finals.
