Teams always have that one opponent they just cannot get past, and for the McMaster Marauders men’s volleyball team it is the Trinity Western Spartans.

That trend continued Friday night as the teams met in the U Sports championships in Quebec with the Spartans sending McMaster to the consolation round after defeating the Marauders three-sets to one.

After a lackluster opening set, the Marauders battled back in the second, pushing Trinity Western to extra points before dropping the set. With their backs against the wall in the third, McMaster dominated the set but failed to keep pace late in the fourth set in the U Sports quarterfinals loss.

In six meetings with the Spartans at the national championship tournament, the Marauders remain winless. However, all six of the contests have been battles with none ending in a three-set sweep.

With the loss, it snaps the Marauders streak of six straight appearances in the national semifinals.

Dylan Romero Marshall, a third-year middle for the Marauders, made his first start at the U Sport Championship Friday. He would rack up 14 kills against four errors on 28 attempts, and added two aces and four block assists, earning Mac’s Player of the Match.

The Marauders will now head to the consolation side of the tournament and will face the loser of the quarterfinal match between the Quebec champions, and hosts, Laval Rouge et Or and the OUA champion Queen’s Gaels. That match will get underway at 3:00 PM on Saturday.

A victory on Saturday will send McMaster to the fifth-place match on Sunday while a loss will end their 2018-19 campaign.
