Calgary Extinguishing The Flames?

It was announced at the Calgary Flames’ golf tournament on Tuesday by the team’s president and CEO Ken King that the team is no longer pursuing a new arena.

King told members of the media that they “are interested in doing it, but we can’t make a deal.” The organization has been in discussions for several months with Calgary’s mayor Naheed Nenshi on the possibility of a new arena as part of a further redevelopment of the downtown core. Even NHL commissioner Gary Bettman had spoke with the mayor back in March about the potential new arena.

While the Scotiabank Saddledome is a grand old building, it is out of date as it was built in the 1980s and with the lack of amenities in the old building it hurts the fan experience.

Flames president of hockey operations Brian Burke said in June that if there wasn’t a new arena that the team could end up relocating. Relocating, new arena. That gets us thinking. Didn’t Seattle put news out that they could have the KeyArena ready to go for a hockey team in 2020?

This wouldn’t be the first time Seattle has had its name batted around for an NHL team. If you remember, the Edmonton Oilers owner Daryl Katz threatened to move his team to Seattle if they did not get a new arena in Edmonton. Thankfully for Oil Country the Rogers Place was built.

Burke remarked to a member of the golf tournament that questioned past comments from Ken King that “we’re not going to make a threat to move, we’re just going to move if we don’t get the deal we need.”

Could this be the beginning of the end of the Flames or the beginning of a new round of negotiations to get a new arena in the downtown to keep the Flames burning in Calgary?

Wonder why they would get rid of a decent team? Not a good sign for the NHL
