Marauders Score Big Doubleheader Sweep In Soccer

McMaster took to their home pitch on Sunday afternoon when they hosted the Guelph Gryphons in OUA Men and Women’s soccer action.

The women were up first and had an evenly matched first half with both teams getting quality chances to score. It took until the 43rd minute of the match before either team would get on the board and thankfully it was the home side when Ally Riganelli got the game’s opening goal.

That goal would all they would need in the game but just minutes into the second half Riganelli would strike again for the Marauders to take a 2-0 lead.

Guelph would put little pressure on Deanna Persico who was in the Mac goal, stopping three shots that were on net.

The win for the lady Marauders was the first of the season, upping their record to 1-1-4.

While the women’s game was an entertaining, the main event was the men’s game against the Guelph Gryphons as it was labeled a grudge match following an incident last season where the Marauders alleged that a Guelph player intentionally broke a Mac player’s leg.

Before fans could even return to their seats following the opening, Anand Sergeant scored in the first minute of play for the Marauders.

McMaster held on to that lead until the 36th minute when Guelph scored to get on the board. Five minutes later Sasha Ricciuti headed a ball past the Gryphons’ keeper to put the Marauders out front again. However, just over a minute after they went behind, Guelph responded before the end of the first half to send the teams to the locker room tied at two.

While the Marauders were battling Guelph they also seemed to be battling the officials in the game as they missed many hand balls and fouls.

In the second half, the teams went back and forth but were unable to put one into the net. That was until the 87th minute when Ricciuti scored his second of the game when he danced past a couple defenders and the keeper.

That goal would turn out to be the winner but Ricciuti wasn’t done as he nicked the ball past the keeper in stoppage time to complete the hat trick and take the game 4-2.

Both teams will get back to the books and the practice field this week to prepare for their next game which will be on the road at Alumni Field when they face the Brock Badgers on Saturday September 16th. The Women’s team will start the day off at 1:15 pm and the men will complete shortly after the completion of the first game.
