McMaster Rugby Teams Win Season Openers

Many OUA sports kicked off during the Labour Day weekend, that included rugby for both of McMaster’s women’s and men’s teams.

On Sunday, the lady Marauders hosted the York Lions at Ron Joyce Stadium.  Tia Svoboda, in her first game with the team, scored two of McMaster’s eight tries on the day. Tia’s sister would also add a try of her own, along with five converts to help the team score a 50-26 win over York.

Britni French kicked off the scoring parade in the seventh minute of the match when she ripped through the Lions’ defensive line, touching down near the posts. Taylor Price added to the lead just a few minutes later to help give McMaster a 12-0 lead.

Before the half closed, Tia Svoboda, Maddy Seatle and Monique Sluys all scored tries to put the Marauders up 33-0.

Mac kept on coming in the second half as Brii English and the Svoboda sisters all added tries before York got on the board.

Although they were pitching a shutout with a 50 point lead they did allow the lady Lions to chip away at the lead but held on for the win.

In the Men’s game on Monday, it was a rematch from last season’s OUA bronze medal game against the Western Mustangs at Back 10 Field on McMaster’s campus.

David Kavtiashvili, Mike Smith and Brett Sullivan all picked up tries for the Marauders with Callum Macleay adding two converts to pace the home side to a 19-12 win over their rivals.

Not much happened in the first 20-minutes of the game as the teams decided to play in the midfield area for much of that time. It would be Kavtiashvili who broke the scoreless draw when he crossed the line for the first score of the game.

Just prior to the official blowing the whistle for half time, Western added a try of their own but was unable to convert the try to give the hosts a 7-5 lead at the half.

Smith would give the Marauders the lead for good just five minutes into the second half, running over his opponents to the try line. Sullivan finished off the try scoring for McMaster which was needed as Western’s Michael Coldwells scored his second try of the game to get his team within a converted try of the home side.

Thankfully for the Marauders, the clock ran out before the Mustangs could add to their score.

While the Women’s team has this week off from game action, the Men will head up to Peterborough on Saturday to face Trent starting at 3:00 pm. The next action for the Women will be on the road against the Western Mustangs on Friday September 15th starting at 5:00 pm.

If you’ve got nothing better to do. OK, so maybe even if you do. Wouldn’t you rather talk sports, post pics of games, solve sports quizzes, and redeem loyalty points for free stuff? Of course you do. And why wouldn’t you! Your mother-in-law will get over that nasty fall. The garbage? You get used to the smell. If you’ve got the time, fansfrenzy is the place to waste it.
