The NBA revealed the three finalists for the year end awards on Wednesday night and one of the finalists for the NBA Coach of the Year just happens to be unemployed.

That’s right, former Toronto Raptors coach Dwane Casey was named one of the finalists along with Utah’s Quin Snyder and Boston’s Brad Stevens.

However, the congratulatory tweet from the Raptors got a lot of mixed reviews from Raptors and NBA fans throughout North America with many gifs that you would have expected to see in a situation like this.

If that wasn’t awkward enough, can you imagine what it would be like if Casey ends up winning the end of the year award? He would likely be receiving it while he is still looking for a new job.

Casey was recently voted Coach of the Year by the National Basketball Coaches Association which is voted upon by the league’s 30 coaches. That honour came just days after his firing. Casey deserves a lot of credit for overhauling his offense while riding a second unit that was one of the youngest in the league.

Boston held the league's top-ranked defense by allowing just 101.5 points per 100 possessions. In their season opener they lost key offseason acquisition Gordon Hayward and then were without All-Star Kyrie Irving for 22 outings, as well.

Stevens wound up getting major contributions out of rookie Jayson Tatum and sophomore Jaylen Brown to compensate, earning the second seed in the East with 55 victories.

Right behind Boston in defense were the surprise Jazz who allowed 101.6 points, managing to win 48 games despite the loss of Hayward to the Celtics last summer. Snyder rode rookie Donovan Mitchell as his new top option, placed his trust in point guard Ricky Rubio, and took a team many believed would be on the outside looking in to narrowly missing out on home-court advantage in the opening round.

While all three of these coaches are worthy of this award it will come down to a two-horse race between Casey and Stevens in my opinion. I would love to see Casey win it for the job he did but also to see the reaction on social media towards the Raptors.

If Casey does manage to win the award, don’t expect this story go extinct as fast as Toronto did in the second round of the 2018 NBA playoffs.

The Coach of the Year award and all the others for the league will be handed out on June 25 at the NBA Awards show in Los Angeles.
