Just when you thought John Cena was going to be pinned down, he changes the storyline.

On Sunday, US Weekly broke the news that WWE Superstars Cena and fiancé Nikki Bella had broken up.

The now former life tag-team partners released a statement saying, “While this decision was a difficult one, we continue to have a great deal of love and respect for one another. We ask that you respect our privacy during this time in our lives.”

The two had been together as a couple since 2012 but not until the reality TV series Total Divas was launched did World Wrestling Entertainment publicly acknowledge their relationship. It would stay on the series and out of wrestling storylines. That is until the build up to Wrestlemania 33.

At that time the pair were put into a storyline that recognized their relationship and put up another real-life couple in The Miz and Maryse. It would build up to a mixed tag match on the “Grandest Stage of them All” with Cena and Bella coming out on top.

Following the match Cena would propose to Bella which was designed to be a major storyline on Total Bellas, a spinoff of Total Divas, and was to culminate in the couple’s wedding.

There is no word if this is a swerve by the WWE for Total Bellas or not. It could be as we have seen WWE leak their Hall of Fame inductees to mainstream media outlets hours before they were announced on Monday Night Raw. However, it does seem less likely that it is a swerve.
